An appropriate diet is observed during the early stage of diabetes, further impairment can be delayed substantially. The dietary therapy of diabetes aims at supplying adequate and balanced nutrition to maintain ideal body weight, preventing blood sugar level from escalating, and preventing or delaying the development of complications. It is important to pay special attention to following;
- Maintain an ideal body weight.
- Take each meal as scheduled and in consistent amounts of food.
- Try to skip the food with deep-frying or pan-frying
- Avoid nuts which are high in fat content, such as peanuts, seeds, cashew nuts, and walnuts.
- Use vegetable oil for cooking. Never cook in animal fat.
- Cooking methods - steaming, boiling, braising, grilling, baking, broiling, or stewing which need less fat.
- MSG and salt should be reduced for the elder.
- Avoid high cholesterol content, such as organ meats, crab spawn, shrimp roe, fish roe.
- Choose foods with higher fiber content, such as whole-grain cereals, unpressed beans, fresh vegetables and fruits but, do not consume in excess of prescribed amount.
- Foods with high starch contents, such as sweet potatoes, potatoes, taros, maizes, beans, chestnuts and dried beans could be taken only as advised by a dietitian.
- Avoid sweetened food.
